starter button - damp?

Triumph Trophy mailing list
Hi, my Trophy 900 has been reluctant to start when returning from work. I hit the starter button and nothing happens at all. There's then a gap of between 5 seconds and 5 minutes before it will start. I think it's due to rain getting into the starter button, as it's left outside. Squirting DW40 into the button seems to clear it.

This common? Is there a good way of solving this?

This sounds more like the starter solenoid to me (its located next to the battery)
You can check by peeling back the insulation boots and using something like some old long nosed pliers to short across the terminals to see if the starter operates but need to be really careful that you don't let the pliers short to earth with the high current. The Triumph solenoid is way over priced but they are really cheap elsewhere so let me know if you want to know where to go for one

Is it possible it could also be the neutral or side stand interlock switch.

Ivor

Split the switch block and dowse the internals with contact cleaner while operating the switches, including the kill switch. I think it is also possible to take out one of the starter switch contacts and clean it with some fine emery paper, if it's that bad.
It could also be your starter relay getting 'sticky'. Also, check the connections through the starting system.

If WD40 cures the problem why not try covering the start button to keep
the rain out. If you don't have a bike cover a simple ziplock bag over
the handle bar and switches should keep the rain out. if that cures the
problem then look no more. If not then start looking at starter
solenoids etc. HTH!

Is it possible it could also be the neutral or side stand interlock switch.

 Hi, my Trophy 900 has
been reluctant to start when returning from work. I hit the
starter button and nothing happens at all. There's then
a gap of between 5 seconds and 5 minutes before it will
start. I think it's due to rain getting into the starter
button, as it's left outside. Squirting DW40 into the
 button seems to clear it.

This common? Is there a good
 way of solving this?

Re: starter button - damp?

Hi,

Mine has developed a similar issue. Approximately 80% of the time my
starter button is now dead. That is until I just wiggle the clutch from its
fully drawn in position while pushing the button. Then she cranks right
off. It is oddly consistent and I've grown to like it. Obviously in my case
the clutch switch needs a good polishing. At least it is not the ignition
switch. Knock on wood..

Just a little food for thought. In your case it may be the button contacts.
Those little brass dremel brush wheels are good for such duty.

Happy Mardi Gras folks!

Enjoy the ride,

There is no clear trend with the button. But is does seem to happen less when the battery is fully charged. The battery is new. Does this point to the solenoid? Cheers G

Hi Giles, Rather than pointing to a solenoid I think it is pointing to the contact points on the starter button and the clutch switch. The power going to those two switches is probably less than 12 volts because of voltage loss inside the harness and various connections and the amps are very low. When the contacts are oxidized or dirty the power just can't make it through the system to activate the solenoid. The fully charged battery has a little more kick to it and it can activate the solenoid. Look for a spray can of contact cleaner. I'd rather do some cleaning than spend money on a part I only might need. If it still is a problem after the cleaning then yeah go ahead and buy a new solenoid.

Have you tried pulling the clutch in while pressing the starter? There are switches on prop stand, neutral and Clutch which will not allow the engine to turn if the circuit is broken
