ignition woes

h6mrv
Hi all, I bought a new battery for my 03 1200 Trophy and I didn't realise til it was too late that the terminals were the wrong way round. I did switch the ignition on at one point and since then I can only get the right hand ignition coil to fire. I've swapped the coils over and the fault remains on the same side so.......I'm guessing that I've blown the igniter box, I'm going to see if I can get it tested but I wondered if anyone had any experience or knowledge of this kind of fault?
Regards sparky Mark.

Re: ignition woes

Hi Sparky,

Sorry to hear. I have not had the experience. Triumph sure made it easy to happen, though, by changing the battery polarity from one year to the next.

I suspect you are on the right track, though. If you need an ignitor box, the first place I would go is Ignitech. Electronic for motorbikes - IgniTech Přelouč http://www.ignitech.cz/en/

Check them out. More frugal price than the original one.

Re: ignition woes

Hi Mark,

Sorry to hear the news. I believe you would be correct in suspecting the
igniter. In fact I seem to remember reading about this happening years ago.
And the brain did fail. Should you plan to toss it. I'd like to take a stab
at cracking it open to see what was damaged. Some have serviceable cases.
Others are sealed in potting compound. Unfortunately, I don't have a spare
or I'd hook you up. Its possible it could even be repaired.

Best wishes,

Samuel

Sparky,

You might try Pinwall Cycle on EBay for a used one.  They generally have
quite a few used Trophy parts.

Maybe the left hand 12 volt feed wire to the coil is bad.
Is 12 volts coming out of the wire going to the left hand coil?
If no power is getting to the coil, that would be a cheap and easy fix.

Re: ignition woes

Triumph Trophy mailing list
Hi Mark,

I'd expect that an integrated circuit chip was damaged. They generally
don't like power supply reversal. Possibility a diode or polarized
capacitor on top of that. Each coil has its own triggering network. So it
sounds like one survived and the other failed.

Hope this helps,

Samuel

Hey Greg,
Isn't troubleshooting that stuff what that Triumph "Tester" I left with you for figuring this stuff out? The instructions for using it are in the Triumph Manuel. I think it is made to do the trouble shooting for you?

Hi Mark,
I did that when I changed out batteries, but I didn't see issues with my coils until later.
The ignitor box is ok on my bike.
The bottom fuse blew, and my alternator stopped working until I replaced it.
I hope it works out well for you.

Well it did turn out to be the igniter box in the end but I have also stuffed my alternator as well. This is getting expensive!! Only 3 weeks before I head off to France & Germany, eek.
Anyone got one for sale? I will try Pinwall as suggested tho.

Thanks again guys.

Hi Mark,

Just replace the regulator. Which is screwed and solidered on the cover end
of the alternator.

Car rebuilders who carry Denso can rebuild them, too.  I have a great source here in the States.

In my case they replaced bearings and some other stuff in addition to the regulator.

I missed your original post, but....

If you're needing the 25A alternator, you can probably find one cheaper from the older generation Kawasaki Concours (the 1000cc). They are the same, just have to switch out the "drive paddle."

Hi Mark,

You can replace the regulator without removing the alternator from the
bike. Just pop the cover and its all right there.
