Starting Problem on 900

Triumph Trophy mailing list
My 900 Trophy has always started very well all through winter, but I've noticed it doesn't like to be left standing for  a while. Why is that? Is it that the carbs get empty of fuel? Anyway, this time it doesn't want to start at all. It nearly did yesterday. It ran on one or two cylinders I think and then stopped. Just wondering if there's a trick to starting them when they've stood for a few weeks?

If mine has stood for a while I always turn it to prime whilst I get my gear on, I'm sure that some of the cranking time I used it have was the slow vacuum fill time for the carbs following evaporation.
 It makes sense

Agreed Ivor. The Johnson Jolt made a noticeable improvement in starting for me, too. Another thing that can help starting after a long rest is a booster battery. That will ensure there is enough voltage to the coils while cranking. Any 12 volt battery will do as long as it's charged and not attached to a RUNNING engine (car, for example).

Why not a "Running engine" Glenn?

Jolt from Johnson 8-)

Hi JOLT!

I'd be worried about damaging something electrical on the boostee if the booster has a 140 amp alternator pumping a charge into it while the booster is boosting the boostee. ;-) A booster battery from a car that is not otherwise active is just a 12 volt source with a seemingly endless reserve compared the bike's needs.

 Cheers,
 Glenn

Glen:  the alternator on the Booster could be 200 amps, it would NOT matter.  Just as it doesn't matter if the booster vehicle is running.  It actually is beneficial if it IS running.
Every alternator feeds through a regulator.  The regulator will not deliver more current than the recipient needs.  Just insure the donar vehicle has a 12 volt system on it.

Just curious as I recently rescued a "damsel in distress" who left
her lights on all day at the golf course where I work and needed a jump
start. I promptly pulled my Honda Civic up next to her VW while one of
my associates hooked up my jumper cables. No sooner than he had hooked
up the cables she hit the starter button, got a solid click, and then
nothing! We instructed her to allow my alternator to charge her
absolutely dead battery a little before trying to start it which she
did. I revved my engine and after a few moments [with the cables still
connected] her car started right up. Kind lady tipped us each $5 and
went on her merry way. On my way home I noticed my battery warning light
coming on when idling at stop lights etc. I managed the 25 mile jaunt
home just in time to coast into my driveway with even the tach and
speedometer no longer working. I pulled the battery out and put it on
the charger overnight only to find it still dead in the morning. After
installing the replacement I learned the alternator was also not charging.

To make a long story short [ Which is way too late now! :-[ ] I
managed to short out a cell in my battery as well as blowing a diode in
my alternators regulator which requires replacing the entire
alternator.  Total cost was $404 minus a $5 tip = $399 plus a days lost
work! The real irony is I have two jump start packs sitting in my garage
fully charged for these kinds of emergencies. I now have one in the
trunk of my car. [Does closing the barn door ring a familiar note?]
Lesson learned!

I can't remember how many times I've started my bike off of my
running car and got away with it and am even guilty of recommending
others to do the same! DON'T DO IT! If something blows it going to be
expensive!

:-(A Jolted Johnson!

Hi Ed, same sort of thing happened to me once. I boosted a car with my Q45 with the engine running. That was years ago and I had forgotten, but I did need to replace the alternator just a few days later. Coincidence? Expensive.

Thanks Bob. You make sense. Maybe my reasons and details were forgotten (the Q45), but I never again did it with the engine running.

 Cheers,
 Glenn

Hard to say what was the best diesel pick-up truck engine ever your 7.3 or the Cummins 5.9 12 valve. Yeah, not boosting you. I can phone AAA for you, though. :-)
