MIXED QUESTIONS: I could use some advice

Triumph Trophy mailing list
Trophists:

I'm just coming off of a long year without riding and getting the bike sorted.  I could use some help.

1.       CONTROLS:

a.       I have a sticky throttle issue.  I've lubed up the cable but the throttle simple doesn't snap back like it should. Baffled.

                                                               i.      There is nothing binding the handlebar "barrel", and as far as I can tell plenty of cable slack.  Any ideas?

ii.      Is there a spring that needs replacing?  If so, does anyone have a part number, source and possible instructions?

b.      How the hell do you lube the brake and clutch cables?  Haynes is less than helpful.

2.       EXHAUST: Does anyone have experience installing Delkevics?

a.       I have a new set and am getting ready to pop them on.  Weight loss, sound factor etc.  Yes, I'm going Hool.

b.      Specifically, KIT30AF Stainless Round - 14inch with Monza Tips.  They just look cooler than the others.

3.       BODYWORK: Does anyone have a few of the grey fairing tabs I can buy?  The one just below my glovebox got lost and well...it ruins the looks.  Actually I wouldn't mind getting a bunch of extra faring fasteners and clips too.  Anyone have a resource?  Has anyone tried any of the quick fasteners on the market (1/4 turn etc.)?

4.       CRITICAL FASTENERS: Last (for now) - what would you all consider the short list of "critical fasteners" for the 900?   Axle nuts, pinchbolts etc.  I'm going to mark the main 10 or so in order to tell at a glance whether anything has moved.

5.       HEADLIGHTS: Has anyone upgraded to LED with fan instead of an H4?  How did it work out?

I'm sure I'll have more as I get the old girl prepped.  And THANKS!!!

Cheers all from Cascadia!

Re: MIXED QUESTIONS: I could use some advice

Hi Wiley

Not sure I can be of much help but I guess the most obvious for the sticking throttles is firstly the cable routing, I assume you have the tank off and can try some re-routing and can also disconnect at the twistgrip to listen for how the return is, eliminating that end.
Have the carbs or carb tops been off?

Why do you need to mark critical fixings? Why not just use a torque wrench, they don't come undone if assembled properly and checked.

Cascadia, really? Which part? I was in Washington but 🇬🇧 UK now.

Regards
Ivor

I installed a set of Delkevics on my "other" bike, a Honda ST1300. Super easy install, had them on in a half hour. And the pipes mount in somewhat similar manner as the Trophy.

Hi Wiley,

Good for you for getting back on the road.

#1) A number of years ago, my throttle cable broke just as I was downshifting to take the frost covered uphill off ramp at 02:00 in the morning. Pucker moment! We only have a single cable system, not a pull cable/push cable system. I had always found my throttle grip much harder to rotate than my Honda's. I had the bike from about 29,000 miles so I figured that was normal. Anyway, I installed a new cable assembly ( http://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/detail/triumph/t2043512/b1390551?m=17544&sch=561645 http://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/detail/triumph/t2043512/b1390551?m=17544&sch=561645 ). It was an easy job and WHAT a difference. It is now just like my Honda. $43.11 very well spent.

#2) Answered by Jack Martin. Looks to be easy and straightforward, as well. I want to do this, too.

#3) I don't have any spares, but ( http://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/detail/triumph/t2300982/b1393203?m=17544&sch=561651 http://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/detail/triumph/t2300982/b1393203?m=17544&sch=561651 ). I have bought new clips at the dealer (called Captive Nuts). They are fairly cheap at $2-$3 ( http://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/detail/triumph/t3350123/b2126256?m=17544&sch=561651 http://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/detail/triumph/t3350123/b2126256?m=17544&sch=561651 ) each (unless you've lost them ALL). For the screws I just pick through mine and put the nicest ones in the most visually obvious locations. Grungy ones can be smoothed up a bit with emery cloth, pushed into a piece of cardboard and resprayed with gloss black Tremclad.

#4) As said, clean and torque.

#5) Sorry, still using high performance, standard wattage, CLEAR glass H4's and Hella FF50 (H7) driving lights.

 Cheers,
 Glenn

Hi Glen, just a quick Q.  your comment about the Throttle cable you purchased (with the link), i took a look out of interest :-)
is it the cable only? or is some thing else supplied. Thanks.

Re: MIXED QUESTIONS: I could use some advice

Triumph Trophy mailing list
Hi Angus,

It was the complete cable assembly - inner cable and outer sheath/housing with preformed bends at each end and lead end pieces that fit into the throttle tube and carb linkage. I can't remember if the clip came with it to lock the connection at the carbs or not. The original is reusable anyway. Compete plug 'n' play. Pull out the original and route the new one in the same way. Pay attention to how it fits throuhg the heat shields and insulation under the tank.

This link might show the drawing http://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/1996-triumph-trophy-control-cables/o/m17544sch561645 http://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/1996-triumph-trophy-control-cables/o/m17544sch561645 .

 Cheers,
 Glenn

I got the throttle cable sorted!!   Thanks everyone.  Cable is in excellent shape...no need to mess with throttle spring - thank gawd.
As always....lube lube lube...apparently the barrel sleeve verticals (where the cable top end attaches) is prone to rubbing on the clamshell casing.
A bit of lube, a light bit of sanding....VOILA!
